D-Day 80 Years
Tudor Lodge has built a lovely connection with their neighbours at HMS Collingwood. Recently they held a ‘stand easy’ fundraising event for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity, where staff and residents embarked on a sponsored bike ride to sword beach, Normandy – a total distance of 202.7km, using a bike machine in our reception. Sword Beach was one of the five main D-Day landing areas during WWII. Many staff, residents and relatives got involved, and they raised an amazing £229.75. Following from this, HMS Collingwood invited some of the lovely residents to their charity bake off lunch by Capita raising funds for the same charity. The sailors from victory squadron came to Tudor Lodge to help wheel the ladies down the road to this lovely event.
In attendance was Josephine, a 98-year-old resident who during WW2 served in the British Army and forged a friendship with a general who became the 34th president of the United States of America, general Eisenhower. At the time he was serving in France as supreme commander of the expeditionary force in Europe. Josephine worked alongside him as a P.A. Along with her WW2 medals she took along a letter of commendation signed by Eisenhower himself and very proudly showed them off to the commanding officer of HMS Collingwood and visiting US Navy personnel. Also happening at Tudor Lodge was their D-day commemorations garden party, with the very talented Amy singing songs from the WW2 era, accompanied by ice cream, tea and cake. Even the sun came out for this lovely day!
Tudor Lodge and Canford Manor were proud sponsors of Lee-On-The-Solent’s D-day 80 years event at Daedalus, where our banners were on show around the event. Sponsoring special events like this is very important to us as a company, to give back to our local community for people to enjoy. This includes some of the residents at Canford Manor, who attended along with carers, to witness the events held there which included learning about the WWII military equipment, services and its history, viewing static aircrafts and flying displays, field gun runs, marching bands and more!
Canford Manor also had a garden party for the D-day commemorations. The staff decorated the garden so beautifully with flags, bunting, balloons and tables all decorated in red, white and blue. Some of the staff even dressed up! Delicious lunch, cakes, wine and other refreshments were served, along with a singer that got everybody up dancing the afternoon away!
